Fear is defined as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.
I had a fear that I carried around for 20+ years, and this fear came from someone else’s experience. A lot of people would just say that is nothing to be afraid of it didn’t happen to you, but for me it was very fearful because I allow my mother’s experience to paralyze me.
When I was around 6 or 7 years old my mother decided that she wanted to dye her hair, she didn’t want any grey in her hair, she thought she was too young to have grey hair, so she went to the store and bought one of those do it yourself boxes. After applying and washing it out she thought all was well, needless to say it wasn’t she had some allergy reaction to the chemicals and her whole head was swollen, to a little girl her head was huge and in my mind at the time I was so afraid my mother’s head was going to explode, we went to the doctor and he said that she just had a allergy reaction and her head would go back to normal in a couple of days.
From that day I was afraid to dye my hair because I thought the same thing would happen to me. I can say with much prayer and talking to my beautician I over came that fear and got some highlights. I must admit it was a struggle over the years and sitting in that chair while she was doing my hair my mother’s experience was in my mind and I was scared even after I came home. Thank God all was well with me!
When we see the consequences of our family and friends bad experiences, that fear is planted at that time and we don’t notice it until we go to try the same thing they tried and our minds bring that situation back to our remembrance and we think the same thing will happen to us. Each one of us is made differently and we all have different reaction to things some good and bad.
Don’t allow someone else’s experience stop you from trying, if their business failed don’t mean yours will, if they got divorced does not mean you should not get married, etc. When that voice comes to remind you about that other persons failure, you just say that was not me and even if whatever it is you try and it fail at least you tried it, you didn’t allow fear to stop you from trying.
II Timothy 1:7(ESV) for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control.
